September: San Mai (Unfermented)

Club selection of September 2013 - Another green unfermented Puerh hardly known outside of Yunnan is on our menu for this month. Jeff found this tea while on one of his tasting rounds of the Meng Song region of Yunnan. A small region with tea villages tucked into the mountains, this is a tea that offers something refreshing and that Jeff had never before had. The area is populated by Hani, Lahu, and a some towns of Han who, generations ago, had migrated from south east China and brought with them their tea traditions. The region is almost entirely dedicated to tea. Discover San Mai Unfermented tea even further with Jeff.

Tasting Notes - San Mai is a tea that isn’t even known much within Menghai County even though it is grown here and Jeff’s first impression of it was of a tea that was refreshing with a bit of the characteristic strength of teas in the Meng Song region. Because it remains a relatively unknown tea, its production has remained unchanged and therefore relatively consistent. It’s flavors hit the mouth in a direct line and it will be a tea that will handle ageing well because of its strong base.
